Lesson Title: Types of Malware

 

Introduction:

This lesson is designed to teach students the types of malware and their relationship to each other.

 

Grade or Age Level of Student(s): Adult

 

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify the main characteristics of each type of malware

Students will know how the types of malware relate to each other

Students will be able to recognize malware on their PC

 

Timeline:

Three 1 hour lessons

 

Materials:

Class Room

Computers with MS Windows & Office

Projector

Screen

Handouts

Presentation

Pens

Notepads  

 

Grouping Strategies: Students will divide into 12 small groups with each group given a type of malware to research.

 

Learning Activities:

 

The lesson will begin with a presentation on types of Malware, risk factors, and how they can identify them.

 

Groups will be split up to do research and answer the following questions:

Type of Malware

What are the main characteristics?

How does it appear?

Does it self-replicate?

Does it damage the hardware or software?

Is it advertising directed?

Does it allow anyone remote access?

Does it cause SPAM or popups?

Does it spread through email?

Does it steal user data?

Is it financially costly?

Are there any other distinguishing characteristics?

 

 

Assessment: I will have each group enter their data into a row in a spreadsheet. When the spreadsheet is complete, we will print it out and students will use it as a study guide for a quiz at the end of the lesson.
